Holy Father's speech

Rome…Domus Mariae… about two hundred and fifty including representatives of Bishops’ Conferences from many countries, delegates of more than fifty local associations. More than seventy countries were represented. There was quite a crowd and already an atmosphere of World Youth Day at the Second International Meeting in preparation for the 15th World Youth Day. Cuba, Hong Kong, Macao, India, Syria, Turkey, Japan…all here in Rome, all here with the same enthusiasm. Excited and a little nervous for all that was to happen in August. Attention focused on organization, the contents and technical-logistic aspects were discussed. Then the Pope. The “world delegation” was received by John Paul II on January 15. It was 10-45: “The Pope loves you and is looking forward to seeing you at the rally”. And then his warm embrace. The dream of a lifetime for many, Emmanuel is sung spontaneously... you should have seen their eyes. Happiness. A smiling Pope walking between the banks of a river overflowing with joy: waving handkerchiefs, a masse of colour. Forty unforgettable minutes, impressed on the memory, circled in red. Forty minutes. Miles and miles, hours and hours of traveling rewarded in forty minutes. It was great!
