ITALIAN ART IN THE WYD2000

While making their pilgrimage to S. Peter’s Basilica, about 200.000 youth, participating to the WYD 2000, can see some reproductions of the master pieces of some Italian artists: Giotto, Beato Angelico, Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Raffello, il Perugino. These master pieces have been chosen  in order to give youngsters coming from all the world,  a full and true testimony of  Italian people’s faith through these brilliant and famous Italian artists.

 

Arriving at Via della Conciliazione, young pilgrims will have the possibility to admire on the lamp  stand an artistic translation of  the Gospel on the Beatitudes, as follows: Beato Angelico, Sermon on the montain (Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it); Giotto, St. Francis renounces his wealth ( Blessed are the poor in spirit); Pontormo, Pietà (Blessed  the oppressed); Antonello da Messina, Christ scourged (Blessed are the meek); Caravaggio, The conversion of St. Paul (Blessed are those who are hunger and thirst for justice); Caravaggio, Seven corporal works of mercy (Blessed are the merciful); Ludovico Carracci, The Annunciation (Blessed are the pure in heart); Cristoforo di Jacopo, The angel of peace (Blessed are the peacemakers); Tintoretto, Jesus before Pilate (Blessed are who are persecuted for the cause righteousness); Raffaello, The mass of Bolsena(Blessed are those who did not see but believed).

 

 Other five pictures, at St. Peter’s Square, are illustrations of different fundamental moments of the life of the first Pope. They are the reproductions of the following works: Domenico Ghirlandaio, The call of the first apostles (Vocation of St. Peter); Perugino, The hand of the keys (The confession of faith of St. Peter); Duccio, Peter denies his Master (The denial of Peter); Raffaello, “Look after my flock” (Do you love me?); Caravaggio, The crucifixion of St. Peter (The martyrdom of Peter).
