Logo and Hymn

The Italian Committee for the 15th World Day of Youth has chosen the graphic symbol and the official hymn for the Jubilee of the Young people after weighing up hundreds of suggestions froma a great number of young people. the logo and the hymn have been devised and created by young people for young people.

The fundamental elements of the logo

It should be noted that the three basic elements characterising the 15th World Day of Youth have been combined into a single image:  i.e. the place, the protagonists and the spirit of the gathering.

The city of Rome is evoked by the stylised version of the dome of St Peter’s Basilica and the Bernini Colonnade.  The image of St Peter’s also recalls the real nature of the Church and the person of the Holy Father.  The young people, who share the leading role in the event, are identified by a unique, simple and irregular sign, conceptually linked with the figure of a circle which is used as a symbol of the totality of the younger generations.

The meeting between the Pope and the young people takes place by means of a mutual “embrace”, in which no-one remains passive;  each individual is at the same time both a promoter and a recipient.

For the colours, three flat tints of the same intensity have been chosen:  yellow, orange and red.  Yellow and red are the colours of the city of Rome, while the various shades of orange stress the dynamism of this encounter and embrace.

The idea and the creation of the logo are by Andrea Filippucci, a young graphic artist from Foligno.

The official Hymn

“Emmanuel” is the title of the hymn composed by four young people:  Marco Mammoli, Marco Brusati, Mauro Labellarte and Massimo Versaci.  It is a hymn which refers directly to the person of Jesus, the “Emmanuel” or “God with us”.  And the theme of WDY2000 is just this:  “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us”.  In its creation, the piece, which lasts ten minutes, was written in Italian with some verses in English, French and Spanish.

“Emmanuel” has already been sung in various parts of the world for some months, by young people who will take part in WDY2000, and who, during the Jubilee of the Young (and especially the two days at Tor Vergata), will form the biggest choir in the world.  The “Hope Music School”, promoted by the National Service of Pastorate to the Young, will deal with the production, execution and recording of the hymn.

“Emmanuel” can be downloaded from the Internet site of the Italian Committee for the WDY2000:  www.gmg2000.it, and from that of the Central Committee of the Great Jubilee:  www.jubil2000.org .
