For World Youth days, the involvement of voluntary helpers has always been a strategic element in the preparation, arrangement and celebration of the event.

Thinking of World Youth Day 2000 (GMG2000) we realize that Catholic volunteers, above all the young, are the ones able to provide the services essential for the an ordered and successful event in a way all their own and in the true spirit of the Day.

This means that for GMG 2000 we must find, organize and direct a large number of volunteers (at least 25,000 are estimated necessary) They will come mainly from Italian dioceses, associations, movements and groups. But we also expect, although less numerous, non Italian volunteers through various groups, Bishops’ Conferences, associations, movements, from other countries who must be put in the condition to work in unison, with the same operative style.

Voluntary work for the GMG 2000 is part of an overall Holy Year project for voluntary work, organized by the "Centro del Volontariato per l’accoglienza giubilare", the body in charge of directing voluntary work for the whole of the Jubilee year.

REQUISITES

Volunteers have the following requisites:

  • to be eighteen before 5 August 2000
  • strong spirit of service
  • partaking the WYD experience of faith
  • to be in good health conditions
  • capability to adapt to different situations
  • the period in Rome must be limited to 5-20 August 2000
    Those who will arrive before or after these days are asked to forward a communication to the CIGMG;
in any case all have to be in Rome as from August 9th 2000
  • knowledge of italian

Anyone who can give his availability even for the previous period (20 July - 4 August) or the subsequent (21-30 Agosto) have to specify it in the "modulo di adesione" (form for adhesion); CIGMG2000 will evaluate on the basis of requirements and requests.
During the permanency in Rome, Volunteers will be supplied with free food, lodging, insurance and the equipment to carry out the service.

RECRUITMENT

Volunteers for the 15th World Youth Day will be recruited by means of a special form distributed by the Comitato Italiano for World Youth Day 2000 (CIGMG) through the available channels (diocesan delegates for youth pastoral, leaders of associations, groups movements, presidents of Bishops Conferences all over the world).

Recruitment requires the completion of a personal form entitled: "modulo di adesione dei volontari" after a reference person has been presented.

Persons requesting to be part of the Voluntary service will receive a personal letter to say they have been accepted with technical and logistic information for beginning service in Rome.

Volunteers commit themselves to a period of at least 15 days and the CIGMG will register them directly with the Centre of Voluntary Service .

FORMATION

Formation is given in two distinct programmes: respectively for team leaders and for ordinary volunteers.

For Team leaders, who will be selected by the CIGMG on the basis of information supplied by the references, formation will have two successive phases, the first will last a week-end, between November and January, at the diocesan level on the contents of the Jubilee together with all the Team Leaders who will operating during the ordinary Jubilee; the second in the Spring in Rome, regarding the GMG2000 only.

For ordinary volunteers formation will take place in Rome in the days preceding 13 August.

All volunteers may avail themselves of constant spiritual assistance by priests offering to take part in the voluntary service.

The programme, for the days 5-20 August will be arranged in such a way that from the 5 to 12 there will be a period of formation, on the 13 August volunteers will celebrate their Jubilee, from 14 to 20 they will carry out the voluntary service for the GMG.

DEADLINES

By 31 october, , the deadline for accepting applications for volunteer service, a very positive response, had been received, on the part of many Italian dioceses, Bishops Conferences in other countries, associations, groups, movements.

Should there be further applications these can be collected and sent to the Comitato Italiano per la GMG 2000 (CIGMG2000). The requests will be examined and accepted on the basis of need at the precise moment. In fact is it opportune for CIGMG2000, at the central level, to have a wider base than estimated necessary (25,000 volunteers) in case of emergency.
